How to make Thosai, Dosa or Dosai


Thosai, Dosa or Dosai is a crepe made from rice and black lentils. It is a popular dish in Singapore, eaten for breakfast or dinner, and is rich in carbohydrates and protein. To most Singaporeans, Jalan Kayu is best known for its roti prata and thosai. For the thosai recipe, here we go.


Recipe for Thosai
Ingredients for Thosai:
  • 600g rice (cleaned)
  • 150g urad dal (black gram)
  • 1 tablespoon fenugreek
  • 1 tablespoon cooked rice water
  • oil or ghee
How to make Thosai:
  1. Soak rice and dhal separately for 6 hours.
  2. Blend dhal, rice, fenugreek, cooked rice and enough water to obtain a smooth batter.
  3. Leave overnight.
  4. Before cooking, add water if required, to obtain a consistency similar to that of sponge cake.
  5. Heat a flat pan. Grease with a little oil.
  6. Ladle the batter onto hot pan, rotating it to obtain a thin thosai
  7. Cook for 2-3 minutes, then turn it over to cook the underside Dish and serve.
To serve: 
Serve it with dhal curry or other curry.
